It is a great privilege to be able to hold a meeting in such a remarkable place as the Teatro Cervantes, which is the main stage space in the capital of the Costa del Sol and the venue of the Malaga Spanish Film Festival.
The Theatre was built in 1869, after a fire destroyed the Teatro del Príncipe, which was renamed Teatro de la Libertad after the revolutionary events that took place in 1868. This Theatre originated from a series of changes made to the old Teatro de la Merced as a result of a visit that Queen Elizabeth II paid to the city in 1862. After the fire, it was decided to build a new Theatre under the direction of architect Jerónimo Cuervo. This theatre, inaugurated in 1870, was named Teatro Cervantes.
The exterior has a classical design, but follows the traditional baroque style and is not very ornate. The highlight of its completely restored luxury interior is the painting on the orchestra ceiling. A work by Ferrándiz and Muñoz Degrain, this painting allegorically represents the activity of the city in the 19th Century.
Thousands of people go to this theatre every year to attend concerts, plays, dance and jazz shows and the Malaga Spanish Film Festival. Thus, the Teatro Cervantes, with a capacity of 1104 people and a wide variety of rooms, has become an ideal place to hold shows and other events.
